Our chef & co-owner,
Jeff Graceffa, grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is a graduate
of the New England Culinary Insitute in Mont Pelier, Vermont. He
developed a love for the Rocky Mountains of Colorado during a seven
year ski bummin stint in Alta, Utah, and Vail & Beaver Creek,
Colorado, where he completed his internship & learned the pizza
business. Beano's Cabin & Tramonti (Beaver Creek) and Pazzo's
Pizza (Vail) are where he fine tuned his art & discovered that
his loves of pizza & skiing can coexist and flourish together.
Kyleena, Jeff's wife
and partner, grew up in Williamsville, New York. At the age of nineteen
she traveled to Italy to meet her relatives, who own a restaurant
in Sicily. That's when the notion of owning her own restaurant came
about. After graduating from the University of Buffalo, Kyleena
grabbed a backpack and, over the course of the next eight years,
traveled to over 62 countries & islands in search of all that
would someday shape her own establishment. Kyleena also spent time
living in Vail, where she was learning everything she could about
running a restaurant. After spending winters in Vail, working at
Sweet Basil & the Game Creek Club, summers in the Hamptons of
New York working at Pino Luango's Sapore Di Mare, and time in Lake
Tahoe, California, she felt she had acquired the knowledge she needed
to open her own restaurant. She met Jeff in Vail where, after tasting
his pizza, she fell in love and decided that the two needed to join
forces.
Kyleena dragged Jeff
back to New York, close to her friends and family, and soon after
they opened the Clarence Center Coffee Company & Cafe in August
of 1998. The cafe is decorated in the same decor as the Stash and
is set in an 1800's Farmhouse. The cafe has been open for 6 years
and has been a huge success. It has recieved much press, including
an aricle in the New York Times. If ever you're in the area of Clarence
Center, New York, please stop by and check it out. Tell them Ky
sent you.
Living in the flat
lands of New York for five years took its toll on Jeff (once a ski
bum, always a ski bum). Feet of lake effect snow is useless without
mountains to play on. The Rockies were calling him back. The two
ventured back to Colorado in January, 2002, in search of the perfect
location for their restaurant. Jeff had shown Kyleena Crested Butte
a year prior but is seemed impossible to break into such a unique
little town. Still they loved it and it was never far from their
minds. After driving around to and experiencing all of the Colorado
ski towns, nothing impressed them like the Butte. CB is where it
had to be. They thus decided to take the gamble of their lives.
Ky and Jeff went back to New York and, though everyone there thought
they were crazy, loaded up a 17 foot truck with all their belongings
& headed out to the wild west. They didn't know a single person
when they came to Crested Butte, but they unloaded that truck and
by themselves created The Secret Stash. On April 10 th, 2002 The
Secret Stash was open for business. Jeff & Kyleena came to Crested
Butte for the same reasons you did. They believe, "The possibility
of having dreams come true is what makes life interesting."
